Sidara Akalloo RBC Race Ambassador
and Cancer Survivor
After having been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2021 at the age of ten (10), my treatment ended approximately nine (9) months ago. These two and a half years created unfathomable challenges and enabled me to see life through a different pair of eyes. I have weathered heartbreak, endured overwhelming grief and I have enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment by beating one of the most fatal diseases known to mankind. However, more than anything, my experience has left me not only knowing that my diagnosis is not my destination, but also with a desire to assist children and parents diagnosed with this dreadful disease.
I have already started on this journey by becoming a United Nations Child Rights Ambassador where my main concern is to fight for the rights of cancer children and all children to access quality education. I have been partnering with a few Non-Profit Organizations including The I Can Campaign in order to bring relief to all families with children who have been diagnosed with this debilitating disease of childhood cancer. I use every opportunity to reach out to children and parents both in person and through social media with the aim of saving one life at a time and assuring them that if I can do it so can you; we just have to believe. It is a joy to see parents and children smile when I can make their journey a bit more bearable, during what is literally the darkest time in their lives. One of my biggest accomplishments thus far is my three (3) years as the Ambassador for the RBC Race for the Kids. RBC is instrumental in the treatment of childhood cancer as they hold our hands and create a sense of security from the moment a child is suspected of having cancer. All that I do and all that I am is because of God and the love and support I have received from everyone around me during my own cancer journey. Therefore, I believe it is not only my duty but my vocation to ensure no child and family ever has to fight alone.
